Perpetual Motion of Water - Robert Boyle's Perpetual Flask - One of the most curious inventions of Robert Boyle, is known as the Perpetual Flowing Vessel, or Self-Flowing Vessel. The principle is quite simple: the weight of the liquid in the vessel is significantly higher than the weight of the liquid contained in the neck of the vessel, this causes a pressure difference which causes the water to rise up the neck of the vessel. Thus, the liquid is forced to flow in order to compensate for the difference in weights (hydrostatic pressures). If this compensation is sufficient to raise the liquid from the neck to the upper zone where the tube ends, the system acquires a continuous behavior to compensate for pressure differences.
